About

Tasa is a world music ensemble that performs original repertoire inspired by the traditions of India as well as contemporary versions of traditional songs from the Indian diaspora.

Tasa was created in 1999 by tabla player and composer Ravi Naimpally. Ravi is an Indian born Canadian musician who is deeply committed to studying the music of North India.

The band was put together to realize a vision that Ravi had to create a new musical form out of the many cultures that co-exist in Canada. Blending instruments and musical motifs from several world traditions Tasa is able to create a rich and seamless tapestry of sound. Tasa won an Urban Music Award for Best World Music Album for their debut release Bhakti.

As part of the Canada Council for the Arts SonicWeave initiative, to showcase Canadian talent in Europe, Tasa toured in Germany, Austria, Poland, Czech, and Italy. All over Canada and parts of the US Tasa has played to enthusiastic crowds and developed a wide fan base.

Their third album Urban Turban released in 2005 has already received critical acclaim.

It's unfailingly interesting... the new album features lush, dense rhythmic overlays and haunting sounds...
Geoff Chapman, Toronto Star

Tasa is creating a unique amalgam, not a fusion, but a confluence of musical streams into a river of improvised originality.
Stephen Pedersen, Halifax Chronical Herald

Jazzy and slinky, it evokes a sexy encounter in a dark lounge one minute and meditation in a green open field the next. In the tradition of Coltrane, the CD shuttles between western jazz and Indian systems of musical scales, the Raga and Tala.
Vinita Srivastava, Impulse Magazine

Ravi Naimpally on tablas stole the set with an intricate solo displaying the broad capabilities of the seemingly small Indian percussive instrument, and further proved himself worthy of the title tablas virtuoso to an excited round of hooting, hollering and applause.
Chris Imrie, Guelph Mercury

The sheer confidence of the playing makes Bhakti elegant and virtually unclassifiable.
