About New Samba Jazz

A group of young, talented and named musicians of the Brazilian music the trio is formed by Chico Willcox (bass), Erik Escobar (keyboards) and Igor Willcox (drums) and has been on the road for more than 6 years playing in festivals, jazz clubs and bars, hotels and workshops.

This makes their sound extremely musical and connected. Releasing their first album called New Samba Jazz by the Swiss label Altrisuoni Records, the trio had the idea of playing samba without borders or prejudices.

Influenced by jazz and Brazilian music, they recorded well known standards from the Brazilian music and jazz Água de Beber (composed by Antonio Carlos Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes) and Prince of Darkness from Wayne Shorter.

Everything played in Samba Jazz, a style which mixes the swing and the samba rhythm with the way of improvising and playing originated from jazz.

A homogeneous mixture which results in an open and inteligent sound without rhythmic, harmonic and melodic restrictions.

The album New Samba Jazz was recorded 100% live in a true interplay with all nuances and dynamics which exist in the music.

Why New Samba Jazz?
Due to the way of playing a modern and new sound, respecting the roots. This is the new generation of Brazilian instrumental music and also probably worldwide. One thing is very clear, the intention is not to innovate, but to impress their ways of playing.

The trio does not see as its task to say if this sound is innovator, but the listener should be able to do it. Furthermore the album New Samba Jazz brings also own compositions by Chico Willcox ( Lembrança and Gente de Casa), demonstrating from one side sensibility, but from the other side intelligence for harmony, melody and rhythmic.

The New Samba Jazz project is totally independently recorded, mixed and mastered 100% digital, in the studio of the Willcox brothers, called W&W Estúdio.

Reviews

This exciting young trio blends Brazilian culture and tradition into a high energy, authentic form of the Jazz Samba. With an emphasis on Jazz Improvisation and perfect musical communication, it is easy to see that Erik, Chico and Igor have a great love and personal commitment to their New Samba Jazz! (Decebal Badila - bassist and composer)

Hearing this CD, we discover a new side of the Brazilian music. We hear here young musicians playing instrumental Brazilian music in a very special way. It is a great exemplar of improvising combined with a fantastic time feeling. Refreshing mixture of originals and well-known jazz compositions in their own way. Just like a nice caipirinha!
(Tony Lakatos – saxophonist and composer)

"The best of what the independent European jazz scene can offer in a single word: Altrisuoni! For the past 12 years, Altrisuoni has represented some of the most prominent European jazz artists and has published well over 200 recordings. The lyricism of Italian artists such as Enrico Rava, Flavio Boltro and Dado Moroni, ideally blends with the more "nordic" harmonies of Mike Westbrook, Dave Samuels and Michel Godard, counterpointed by the rythmical oestrus of percussionists such as Pierre Favre, Julio Barreto and George Brown.
