"When everyone else realises how good O'Shea is, remember where you heard it first"
Steve Lawson, Bassist Magazine, UK

"If you happen to be a bass player, you might be tempted to think that there's something magical about the way Franc O'Shea handles the instrument- in fact anyone listening to his new CD 'Esprit' would be likely to come to the same conclusion. This is very much a showcase for Franc's superb playing. A virtuoso performance indeed"
Pete Martin, Jazz UK Magazine

"Brilliant vibrant bass playing" Sarah Ward, Radio Presenter, Jazz FM, UK

About Alkimia:

Alkimia is a magickal journey through European, Eastern and African music that transports the listener to a place where cultural elements blend and transmute into a timeless experience.

Alkimia is a finely honed collection of compositions. Featuring the writing talents of Franc O'Shea, it reveals a plethora of world percussion instruments including cajons, tinajas, talking drums and tablas, set in the mystical world of Flamenco, Arabic scales and Moorish melodies. Being an almost fully acoustic album, O'Shea sets out to show that the fretless bass is not merely an electric instrument but a fully expressive amplified acoustic instrument that blends seamlessly with Spanish guitar, flute and violin. Alkimia is a place where Flamenco meets hypnotic African rhythms, haunting harmonies with a melancholic wisp of Irish Folk, and fiery improvisations.

After the critical acclaim received for his first album, O'Shea began to search beyond the confines of electric Jazz instrumentation for his music. His eclectic approach to composition had already begun to bear fruit on his 1999 Esprit album with tunes such as the African tinged 'B for Baka', but the coming years saw both a new musical and spiritual journey open before him. He could feel the call of the drums that he grew up with in Swaziland pulling him south.

Following a period of intensive study of Flamenco forms, O'Shea decided to pack his bags and make the move to Andalucia in Spain, the birthplace of Flamenco. This period turned out to be a four year sojourn and he became steeped in a culture full of musical treasures with Granada's pungent mix of Arabic and Moorish melodies. Being of Irish, Spanish and African descent, O'Shea felt at home in this atmosphere where people and music come first and business later. He spent many a night jamming with the gypsy's in the caves of the Sacromonte experiencing first hand the 'duende' of the Flamencos.

As O'Shea became established in Spain's burgeoning Flamenco/Fusion scene, he got to know members of the legendary guitarist Paco de Lucia's group. This included Spain's top musicians Jorge Pardo and Rubem Dantas who are renowned on the world stage in their own right and through their work with the likes of Astrud Gilberto, Chick Corea, Paquito D'Rivera, Camarn de Isla, Tomatito, Michael Brecker, Al Di Meola. Along with Paco's second guitarist of ten years, Juan Manuel Caizares, Jorge and Rubem agreed to collaborate on O'Shea's Alkimia album.

Flautist and saxophonist Jorge Pardo was barely in his twenties when he began to share the world stage with de Lucia in the seventies. Renowned as the spearhead of the Nuevo Flamenco scene, with many awards under his belt, he has created a stylistic space all of his own, fusing elements of Flamenco, Moorish, African and Jazz music, securing a place as one of Spain's greatest player/composers. Rubem Dantas will forever go down in the annals of Flamenco history as the man who bought the Peruvian percussion instrument, the cajn (box), to flamenco music during his tenure with Paco's band in the seventies. Realising the potential this instrument had to blend seamlessly with the guitar and palmas, he created a sound that is so associated with Flamenco that many are not aware that this instrument is a relative newcomer. Both Rubem and Jorge appear on Chick Corea's most recent album The Ultimate Adventure and are currently touring the world with his Touchstone band.

O'Shea also enlisted the talents of other great Spanish players such as the percussionist Nan Mercader and guitarist Chema Vilchez, another musician who crosses both the worlds of Flamenco and Jazz through his work with Richard Bona and John Patitucci. Not forgetting his Irish roots, O'Shea also called upon the renowned Folk flautist Philippe Barnes to add Celtic flavours, and the young Peruvian born violinist Benjamin Sarfas who's improvisational daring belies his age.

Biography

Generally regarded as one of the most talented bass guitarists of his generation Franc O'Shea has secured a reputation that has spread worldwide.

But it is not only his bass playing that has gained him this respect internationally but also his incisive compositional skills.

Franc was born of Irish, English and Spanish blood in Swaziland, Africa. He was influenced by the sounds of the native's songs and drumming as his mother would take him to tribal gatherings. He comes from a long line of musicians. His father had played trumpet, his brother keyboards, while his grandfather was a big band alto saxophonist and his uncles played drums and flute. He moved to England when he was 6, where he spent his later childhood on the south coast in Brighton taking up the bass guitar at the age of 12.

His open spirit led him to discover a love for all types of music including Jazz, Flamenco, Funk, Irish Folk, African, Latin, Rock and Classical. Almost completely self taught he did study formally for one year and in 1987 he graduated from Chichester College with a distinction in Jazz and Popular Music.

He was a founding member of the dynamic Brazilian dance combo BATU in 1992. Their first single 'Seasons of my mind' which was recorded in Paris became a world wide club and radio hit. They also toured Europe regularly playing at major festivals such as Glastonbury as well as appearing on television in the UK. They also shared major concert stages with Brazilian stars Flora Purim, Airto Moreira, and Joyce. Their last recording was for Island Records on their 'Rebirth of Cool' series.

He was also a founding member of the Jazz Funk Latin band URUBU, whose first single was mixed in New York and featured the Groove Collective horns. Their debut album 'Freedom' received lots of radio play in the UK and they also successfully toured Brazil appearing on television and radio there.

O'Shea has also performed with many popular artists including the legendary YES guitarist STEVE HOWE, 70's Folk singer BEVERLEY MARTYN (bass and musical director), and chart topping soul sensation LISA MOORISH with whom he appeared many times on European television (including MTV).

Such is the diversity of O'Shea's talent that he also works with one of the UK's top Flamenco ensembles 'CANDELA' and Irish Flute star PHILIPPE BARNES. He has also recorded singles with the internationally renowned garage band BAH SAMBA supplying the bass for their massive international club hit 'Reach Inside'. He also appears on their critically acclaimed debut album 'Bah Samba'.

In the field of Jazz, Franc has worked with many top players including concerts with the famous American singer JOE LEE WILSON (renowned for his performances and recordings with Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins, Artie Shepp, Pharoah Sanders), who was also the winner of the coveted 'Downbeat poll' in the singers category for 3 years consecutive.
Franc has worked with the brilliant trumpet player BYRON WALLEN (George Benson, Freddie Hubbard, Chaka Khan) whom he had a duo with as well as sharing the bandstand with him on many other concerts.
He has also worked with one of the UK's greatest saxophonist's BOBBY WELLINS, whose classic 1965 album with pianist Stan Tracey, 'Under Milk Wood', is regarded by many critics as the best British Jazz album of all time.
Franc has also recorded with trumpeter GERARD PRESENCER (Joni Mitchell, Sting, Charlie Watts Big Band) who is renowned for his soloing on the Us3 reworking of Herbie Hancock's 'Cantaloupe Island' which was a major hit internationally, and made him one of the most heard Jazz players in the history of the music.
Franc has also recorded with New York trombone player JOSHUA ROSEMAN who is known for his recordings with Steve Coleman, Lester Bowie and Miles Davis bassist, Dave Holland.
In 1999 Franc was signed by guitarist TONY REMY (Steps Ahead, Lonnie Liston Smith) to ALLTONE RECORDS and became label mates with the acclaimed saxophonist JEAN TOUSSAINT (Art Blakey, Wynton Marsalis, McCoy Tyner, Gil Evans). Franc's debut album for Alltone, 'Esprit', features many top Jazz artists including NIGEL HITCHCOCK (Paul McCartney, Pink Floyd), BYRON WALLEN, LIANE CARROLL, and GERARD PRESENCER. It has received excellent reviews from many leading publications such as The Observer, Jazz UK, Jazzwise, Bassist, Jazz Journal International and Musician as well as lots of play on several European radio stations, including Jazz FM, BBC Radio 2, and Music Choice Europe. It also reached number 4 in the Jazzwise magazine chart, and O'Shea has been featured in Jazz UK, New Insight and Bassist magazines.

Also Europe's largest cable and digital radio station, Music Choice, produced a programme on him and he has played many international festivals and concerts promoting his music. In addition, two tracks from 'Esprit' were selected by German label Hotwire Records for their 'Bass Talk 6' compilation series which has featured bassists Carles Benavent (Paco De Lucia), Victor Bailey (Weather Report) and Mark Egan (Pat Metheney). Franc's tracks appear alongside tracks by internationally renowned bassists Victor Wooten, Michael Manring, and former Chick Corea bassist, Bunny Brunel. Another track appeared on the American magazine 'Bassics' compilation album alongside tracks by Miles Davis bassist Marcus Miller and Joe Zawinul/John McLaughlin/Herbie Hancock bassist, Matthew Garrison.

Also he participated in the 2003 European Bass Day in The Netherlands and contributed a track for a compilation album of bassists that played at this event, such as Dominique Di Piazza, Norm Stockton, etc.
