Joe Shotwell

The members of the Atmos Trio are all extremely well-rounded musicians. Having been hiring their services out to other musical projects in every conceivable musical styles for years, it wasn't until 2004 that the Trio decided to pursue their own muse.

Each member brings their own world of influences and spirit. These three musos, having spent so much of their energy lending their talents to countless projects for other people, began to ask the question: "What would happen if we just play the music that we want to play?" This simple idea put into motion a series of events that culminated into this set of tunes, which, in part, represent the musical answer.

Combining singable melodies usually associated with "pop" music, unexpected harmonic and tonal shifts of moderns jazz and World textures, the Atmos Trio is busy carving a unique niche for themselves. Mix these elements with stunning solo and ensemble improvisations and the Trio will take you on a musical journey not soon forgotten.

The result is a cohesive signature "group" sound presented in these original compositions. The Atmos Trio blend unexpected harmonic and tonal shifts with stunning solo and ensemble improvisations. Influences include Chick Corea, Pat Metheny, Richard Bona, Bela Fleck & the Flecktones, John Scofield, Bill Frisell, Weather Report, and Tribal Tech.

Jeff Obee
Six-string electric fretted and fretless bass

A versatile and supportive bassist, Jeff has covered the stylistic map in his 30 years as a professional. In this time he has consistently gigged with various bands playing jazz and fusion; world music; electronic dance music; soul, R&B, and funk; rock, pop, and ska; and top 40 and standards.

Originally from Madison, Wisconsin (where he studied with jazz great Richard Davis) he moved to the San Francisco area in late 1979 and joined Point of Departure, a dynamic jazz-influenced group performing the original compositions of its members (most notably keyboardist John R. Burr). They played regularly at venues in the area for five years, and shared the concert stage with Dave Brubeck, Vital Information, The Dregs, and various Windham Hill artists. He also played with Booga-Booga during that period, a Zappa-influenced group consisting of former Berklee School of Music faculty.

The late 90s to the present has brought involvement in the Shelley Doty X-tet for four and half years of local gigs, showcases, and tours up and down the west coast; concert performances with flute virtuoso Viviana Guzman's Performers of the World and Divas Latinas; The Venusians (with Rob Michael), a techno/electronica influenced world pop band that played festivals, concerts, packed clubs, and many corporate events (particularly in the Silicon Valley); and Groove.Org, a unique and original instrumental trio.

Joe Shotwell
Drums and percussion.

Joe has been playing drums and percussion for the last 29 years. Along with his formal training, he has extensive performing and recording experiences ranging from jazz, rock and pop, to experimental music. Playing with groups and traveling all over the Eastern seaboard really proved to be a tremendous learning experience.

Upon moving to California in 1987 (from Baltimore)he continued playing with various local groups and working in the studio. In the Spring of 2000, Joe was involved with Eric Idle, as he exploited Monty Python on a national tour, which culminated in New York at the prestigious Carnegie Hall. On this tour he also backed up international artists Art Garfunkel and country legend, Clint Black.
