Christmas tunes get a little funky
FROM THE HIPSTER'S VAULT

"Christmas Time is Gears" by ABCD It's slinky, it's jazzy, it's seasonally appropriate, and, best of all, it's local. "Christmas Time is Gears" is a homegrown Christmas album from your North Country jazz authorities, Chuck D'Aloia and Art Bernstein. D'Aloia's resume reads like my childhood musings on "What I want to be when I grow up." He's an instructor of jazz guitar at Skidmore College, an accomplished pit musician and composer, and has been on tour with everyone from Del Shannon to Liza Minelli. Yes, you read that correctly. I said Liza. Art Bernstein is the natural choice to complete the ABCD power couple.

His skills as a percussionist have earned him a laundry list of accolades and session work. Bernstein has also published two books on the subject -- one on the drum set and one on the snare alone. This album is a tour de force in instrumental prowess. Nothing is lacking. ABCD's version of "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" is downright sexy.

It kind of makes you wonder just what the fat man has in his sack this year. You'll want him to curl in front of the fireplace instead of making his usual exit up the chimney. ABCD converts "Angels We Have Heard on High" from an obligatory church chorale into an upbeat celebration of the song's message. The duo's version of "Silent Night" is dreamy and melodic.

"Christmas Time is Gears" has got me wishing I had some mistletoe handy. Track's you'll dig: If you're into the devotional part of Christmas, check out "Angels We Have Heard on High." If some bluesy tree-trimming is more your style, "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" is not to be ignored. Yowza.

Want more? ABCD has an album of original music called "Under the Hood." It's stellar and I don't use that word lightly.
